In 1967, Keith and Brian Vickery, two young oiks from a farm in South Somerset, joined the Crewkerne Youth Band. This was to have a profound effect on their lives. Helping to open their eyes to the opportunities the world offers to those who apply themselves. Playing in the band also showed the benefits of working with others as part of a team.
Some band members stayed with the band for the rest of their days, forming lifelong friendships. For others, it was a springboard for successful careers in other parts of the UK or abroad. Brian and Keith went on to travel the world and played at times with amateur bands in Zimbabwe, Australia, London, and North America. They never forgot their origins in South Somerset, though, or how taking part in amateur music can enhance one's life.
Despite life's ups and downs, Keith and Brian in many ways, had a blessed life. Yes, diligence is the mother of good luck, but if taking part in an amateur music group teaches us anything, it should be the importance of teamwork, be it in performing music or keeping the show on the road.
The Vickery Fund is an attempt to pay back in some way for those who put in the hard work before us.
Oh, and giving away money to charity can be fun.
